Embers glowing in an old stone farmhouse hearth

The Winter Scent · Seasonal Issue

Cold Chimney

Woodsmoke, dried fig and a cold-stone mineral base. The room after the fire has gone out.

Where it came from

We found it in an old farmhouse in the Mendips. The hearth had been cold for hours, but the room still held the fire — spent ash, resin left in the stone, a dryness at the back of the throat.

Cold Chimney is our attempt to keep that room. Not the flame — the quiet afterward.

The notes

Top — Bergamot peel, black pepper

A bright, dry snap that opens the door before the smoke arrives.

Heart — Dried fig, cedar smoke

Sweet, leathery fruit folded into the resin of a spent fire.

Base — Wet stone, vetiver

The cold mineral floor of the hearth — damp, earthbound, slow to leave.

One pass, and the fire returns.

The candle lays down the base; the mist carries the top notes. Together they hold the whole hearth from lit to spent.
